Dye Sublimation printing is the application of dye sublimation inks onto a polymeric surface using a heat transfer.

Using pressure and heat the process allows the inks to change format from a solid to a gaseous state, enabling penetration of the polymeric surface, resulting in a full colour image.

Sublimation ink is a solid. When heated it turns to a gas and migrates. When it cools it turns back into a solid state. If you add pressure when the ink is in the gaseous state it will migrate into another surface (the substrate). If that surface is a man-made surface such as polyester it will dye that surface forming a permanent bond that will not crack, peel or wash away.This process will not work with cotton or  standard metal or tiles.

Since the ink is dyeing a surface you must be able to work with the original surface colour and as the colour 'white' cannot be sublimated the best option is to start with a white surface.

A transfer is printed in reverse using sublimation ink and high quality dye sublimation transfer paper. The transfer is then offered to the chosen substrate and using heat, pressure, and correct timing the image changes format from a solid to a gas and is transferred from the paper to the substrate.

Variables such as quality of ink, properties of transfer paper and the properties of the printer all have to be taken into account to create an exact replica.

(Metal and tiles can be dye sublimation printed but first they have to be treated with a special surface coating that enables the process to take place).
